Line 4: Clinical child and family studies

Prof. Carlo Schuengel

Child and adult development is embedded in social relations. The ‘Challenges to childrearing relationships’ research group studies the ways in which the quality of family relationships and care relationships interacts with cognitive, biological and behavioural development processes, and how this interaction can be improved by external help and support.

To this end, the group is carrying out longitudinal and experimental studies to explore fundamental change and intervention processes. It is also using intervention studies to assess ways of applying the knowledge obtained. The research is also partly embedded in the Institute for Health and Care Research (EMGO+), which is part of VU University Amsterdam and VU University Medical Center Amsterdam. The group works closely with professional practitioners and organizations in the broad field of youth care services, education and care for the disabled.
