Dr. Tieme Janssen

As the field of educational neuroscience has grown, questions have emerged regarding the ecological validity and applicability of lab-based research to educational practice. Recent developments in mobile neuroimaging technology (EEG, fNIRS) may offer a solution by bringing the lab to real-world learning settings. However, this comes at the cost of lower experimental control. A cyclic research model, which involves iterating between lab-based, semi-naturalistic, and fully naturalistic neuroscience, is well suited for bringing these various approaches together. During the seminar, I will further discuss the translational problem and provide an overview of educationally relevant mobile neuroimaging studies, including those performed by the Emerging Field Group (an EARLI initiative) led by our lab of learning (LOL). I will conclude with a vision of the future, involving both opportunities and (ethical) challenges.
