The URC program selects outstanding scientists who show excellence and high potential to become leaders in their field of research. Nienke’s professorial chair is titled ‘Neuroscience & Society: Mind, Brain and Education’. Specifically, her research aims to support as many children as possible to learn with pleasure and enthusiasm. While performance pressure and stress at school are increasing among students, Nienke and her team investigate methods for students to develop a healthy self-image that contributes positively to motivation and resilience to failure and stress. The connection between neuroscience and educational practice, and society more generally, is central to her research.
For example, with her team she developed an intervention that allows pupils to experience their influence on their learning processes via EEG-neurofeedback. Another line of research investigates how neuroscience impacts society, such as how scientific insights into adolescent brain development influence the public’s perceptions of ‘the teenage brain’. In research institute LEARN!, she leads the programme of "educational neuroscience- brain, learning, and development".
