A LEARN! team of researchers recently won the bid to evaluate the Dutch catch-up programmes in Primary and Secondary Education on behalf of the Dutch Ministry of Education and the NRO. The team (Prof. Melanie Ehren, Prof. Martijn Meeter, Dr. Anne Fleur Kortekaas, Dr. Anne de Bruijn and Rukiye Turkeli with Dr. Carla Haelermans from the University of Maastricht) will evaluate the effectiveness of the various interventions through 4 studies: 1) an analysis of the applications of schools and their theory of change of why the choosen programmes will work in their particular context, 2) a quantitative analysis of student performance data to understand whether these programmes have allowed disadvantaged students to catch-up, 3) qualitative case studies of the most prevalent types of programmes (with a view to positive outliers to inform best practice), and 4) an online survey to a sample of schools to understand the effects of the programmes on student well-being, perceived self-efficacy and socio-emotional development. The study started in October and will be implemented over two years with initial results published by the end of 2020. Watch this space for news!
